If you have Windows installed via BootCamp you just start up holding the option key. If not, you need to either install windows via Boot Camp (Which comes with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard), VMWare Fusion, or Parallels Desktop)

Parallels Desktop 5 doesn't play well with Kaspersky Anti-Virus on some Macs

In my opinion, as a full-time enterprise Windows admin, you're doing this wrong.

I'd like to suggest not running any AV at all. Antivirus is a real resource drain, regardless of which package you're running, and the benefits aren't really worth the performance tradeoff if you're a capable user.

Windows 7 (and Vista) are quite nailed-down out of the box, and unless you dial down all security features, you're probably protected against 90% of what's out to get you.

The other 10% can be avoided by computer smarts that I'm assuming you possess if you're with it enough to put all this kit together. Don't surf to strange websites, especially with IE8, don't download odd files, etc. Common sense things, mostly.

If you're still concerned, set up Parallels to take scheduled daily or twice-daily snapshots of your VM (I'm working on the assumption that Parallels has this feature; I've only used VMware Fusion). If you do get a virus, just roll back to a snapshot.

Parallels Desktop 5: Bug fixes make the difference | TechBlog ...

In terms of speed, with Aero enabled, Parallels is noticeably faster than Fusion in all its various modes — in a window, full screen, Coherence (in which Windows programs float free on the Mac desktop) and a hybrid mode called Crystal. Even on my iMac, which uses an older ATI Radeon 2600 HD graphics processor, Coherence running Aero is a remarkably smoother experience than VMware Fusion's similar Unity mode. VMware released its own update recently that improves its Unity/Aero performance in Fusion 3, but Parallels 5 still runs circles around it.

Before the Parallels 5 update, the program had some bugs that made it very irritating. For example, while running in Aero on either my iMac or newer MacBook Pro, Parallels 5 would flash, the screen would turn black, then return to a normal display. Sometimes, Aero would break and the display would switch to the "basic" display. This problem is gone now.

Parallels 5 also had a nasty bug that has dogged earlier versions of the software: It would intermittently lose the shared memory clipboard with the Mac. You'd copy something  in a Mac program, but then could not paste it into a Windows app. That also appears to be fixed, though I haven't been using the new build to tell for sure.
